THE ADULTERATION OF FOOD.
The Inspectors under the Sale of Food and Drugs and Margarine Acts
obtained 925 samples of food under the provisions of these Acts for analysis by the
Public Analyst, and of these 124, or 13.4 per cent. were returned by him for
prosecution.
Under the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts alone 885 samples were obtained, of
which 111 or 12•5 per cent. were adulterated, while under the Margarine Act 40
samples were bought, of which 13 or 32•5 per cent, were sold contrary to the
sections which provide for the proper marking and labelling of this food.
The proportion of adulterated articles was above that of the preceding two
years, but not so high as in 1892 and 1893.
The subsequent statement does not include articles procured under the
Margarine Act which does not deal with adulteration, but with the marking
and labelling of packages and parcels, and therefore cannot be reckoned among the
sophistications, only shows the amount of adulterations practised in the last ten
years.
