Great though this improvement has been there is still some laxity in reporting
the cases immediately; for, unfortunately, some teachers seem to forget the code
regulations (which instructs them to report the case at once to the Medical Officer
of Health) until they find that a considerable number of their children are absent
through some particular disease, and then, becoming alarmed, they notify them,
but in such large numbers that it is impossible for the sanitary staff to attend to
them in a satisfactory manner without completely disorganising their other duties.
Besides which the great advantages which an early notification gives are lost; and
children, who are not themselves ill, but who live in infected homes, are allowed to
attend other elementary or private schools with the result that they too may
become infected.
