3. Includes Phthisis, Scrofula, Rickets, Tabes Mesenterica, and deaths registered as being
caused by Tubercular Meningitis in persons more than 1 year old.
4. Including Atrophy and Debility, Want of Breast Milk, and Premature Birth, in children
under 1 year.
5. Includes Infantile Hydrocephalus, Meningitis, Convulsions and Teething under 1 year.
The table shows that the number of deaths from the ordinary
infectious diseases varied very little from that of the preceding
year, as there were 689 against 685, although there were 156
deaths from influenza, against 31 in 1890. This will be referred to
specially when the rate and progress of different diseases are
considered. Tubercular diseases exacted a larger toll than usual,
whilst wasting and convulsive diseases of infants under one year
were about the same. The deaths per 1,000 population per annum
varied between 7.76 in 1889, and 10.42 in 1891, chiefly from
influenza.
