It will be seen that a considerable portion of the
Rural District is not covered by Nursing Associations.
Part of the area—for example, East and West Tilbury
and Linford—are so sparsely populated that such a
provision becomes very difficult. There are other areas,
Orsett for one, where I have tried on several occasions
to awaken interest, but without success.
The Hospital Home Comforts Committee, established
in 1926, has continued its useful work. The
Medical Officer of Health has continued as Chairman.
The Depot was inaugurated to meet the demands of a
working-class population in times of illness, and is in
a position to supply practically any article required for
a sick-room at a nominal charge. Depots have been
established at Grays (open 2-4 p.m. daily), Tilbury,
Chadwell-St.-Mary, West Thurrock, Purfieet, Stanfordle-Hope,
Orsett, South Ockendon and Aveley. During
1933 the following articles were issued :
Bedpans 168
Bed-rests 84
Air rings 77
Crutches 58
Air beds 42
Waterproof sheets 28
Urine bottles 28
Invalid chairs 28
Air pillows 27

The Committee's scheme for the supply of nurses,
persons with nursing experience, and domestic helpers,
to the home of the sick, has continued quietly but
satisfactorily. Owing to the demands for help the
number of names on the register has been increased.
