Diphtheria shows a reduction of 46 cases since
1930, and Scarlet Fever a decrease of 18. The absence
of Smallpox during the year should be noted, but several
cases of contacts of cases of Smallpox occurring outside
the district were kept under observation.
I regret that the amount of Anti-toxin issued for
Diphtheria cases was almost negligible, despite an
extension of the facilities for its issue. By arrangement
with the Superintendent of Police, Grays, serum
may be obtained at any hour of the day or night when
the Department is closed, upon application to the
Police Station, Grays. Thanks are due to the Superintendent
for his kind co-operation.
No use has been made of the Schick and Dick
Tests for Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever respectively.
The occurrence of two cases of Encephalitis Lethargica
was unusual. Investigations failed to reveal the
slightest indication of the source of infection, and both
proved fatal within a few days of notification.
Laboratory Facilities.—The examination of pathological
and bacteriological specimens is carried out by
the Essex Counties Public Health Laboratories, Queen
Victoria Street, London, E.C.4.
