Notification of Diseases—178.
25 cases of Small-pox notified; 2 deaths, both in
hospital; 21 of the cases occurred in West Thurrock, 1 at
Little Thurrock, 1 at Aveley, 1 at Stifford, and 1 at
Chadwell-St.-Mary (village); 21 cases were removed to the
Isolation Hospital, as also were 19 cases from Grays Local
Board district. 3 cases notified were treated at home, as was
also 1 case not notified, which was at Anglo-American Oil
Cottages, where 1 case had been ill for 4 weeks when notified,
and one 6 or 7 weeks (not notified) and very few, if any,
precautions had been taken to prevent the spread of the
disease; a summons was taken out and conviction obtained;
two cases were of a pea picker and infant found walking in
road, the woman, with Small-pox well out, had been sleeping
in a barn at West Thurrock with other people.
