type of small house is just what this class of tenant desires and is
happier in, than he would he in a tenement flat whore he would he in
many instances deprived of his hobbies.
Considering the good general condition of the property, the class of
tenant and the absence of overcrowding, (for not one house in this area
is seriously overcrowded) I do not feel justified in advising the
Committee, on the grounds of bad housing, to embark on this scheme
unless it can be shown before commencing, that many more people
could bo housed under equally advantageous conditions than at present
occupy this area.

Of these 76 houses, only 15 have more than one family.
Rents: From 17s. 3d. for six roomed house and wash-house to
8s. 11d. for two rooms and scullery.
The owners of the whole estate are "Clarke & Son," Dacre House,
5, Arundel Street, Strand.
The above area might bo dealt with as an "improvement area"
under the Housing Act, 1930 at some future date by removing some of
the smaller houses and thus opening up the district.
I have pleasure in reporting that the upper floors of Nos. 8, 20, 22,
26 and 28a, Newington Causeway, formerly workshops or workplaces
have been converted into flats which will accommodate 8 or 9 families,
all of which have been let to Southwark residents.
The property is on the Bridge House Estate.
