In front of No.1 it measures about 10 feet in width, widening out
to 18ft. 6ins. in front of No. 5, but suddenly narrowing again until Nos.
6 to 9 have only a width in front of 6 to 9 feet.
As there is no gas supplied to these houses, they have to depend to
a great extent on coal fires, and the smoke from these, being unable to
get away freely owing to the high surrounding buildings, blows down
and deposits soot, &c. on the houses and their contents.
Each cottage has its own w.c., No. 10 w.c. being situated at the
opposite end of the court. Only two have coppers.
There are two water taps in the court, and one gas lamp.
One large dustbin, recently renewed, meets requirements in that
direction.
No.1 has been closed for some months since the last tenant was
ejected, and will not be re-let.
The sizes of the rooms are:—
Ground floor, about 12ft. x 11ft, x 6ft. 10ins. high.
First floor, about 11ft, x 10ft. x 6ft. 2ins. high.
About 890 and 670 cubic feet respectively.
No. 10 is slightly larger.
They are occupied in some cases by too many persons:—
No. 2. 3 adults,
No. 3. 4 adults.
No. 4. 2 adults and 3 in family (18, 14, 12.)
No. 5. 2 adults and 1 son of 18.
No. 6. 2 adults and 2 children under 10.
No. 7. 2 adults and 3 in family (24, 19, 17.)
No. 8. 2 adults and 5 in family (15, 12, 10, 5, 3.)
No. 9. 2 adults and 2 children under 10.
No. 10. 2 adults and 4 in family (17, 15, 10, 6.)
Total 41 persons.
Separation of the sexes is impossible.
The buildings are old and worn out, the floors in some cases having
sunk. The roofs are only kept water tight by constant repair.
As the property has been the subject of house-to-house inspection
twice recently, most of the rooms are fairly clean, but their smallness,
