the year the number of cases sent for treatment was 133. Many of the
children have made good progress particularly in cases of rickets malnutrition
and wasting, and in the winter when natural sunlight is
deficient this treatment is of undoubted use and is worthy of continuance.
MUNICIPAL DAY NURSERY.
The Creche in Kennington Park Road established for the purpose of
taking care of children up to the age of 5 years, while their mothers are
at work, is still doing very good work.
The staff at present consists of a matron, a trained nurse, a nurse,
maid, 3 probationers, a cook and cleaner.
There was a considerable fall in attendances for some weeks, which
was due to two causes, an epidemic of measles and a wave of industrial
depression, during which many mothers were out of work and consequently
were compelled to stay at home and look after their families.
This was only temporary and the numbers again slowly increased to an
average attendance.
CONVALESCENT TREATMENT.
An arrangement was entered into between the Borough Council and
the Invalid Children's Aid Association, by which the Council undertook
part payment for children under 5 years of age sent to Convalescent
Homes by the Invalid Childrens' Aid Association, and 53 children were
thus assisted to have the necessary treatment and fresh air to restore
them to health.
Four children were referred to the Public Assistance Committee for
convalescence.
110 mothers and babies were sent away for holiday from the
Mayor's Fund.
608 Dinner Coupons were given to necessitious mothers who were
referred to the Southwark Invalid Kitchen, at a cost to the Council of
£15 4s. Od.
The treatment of convalescent children has been carried out for
years by the I.C.A.A. but, by the arrangements mentioned above, the
Council now bears a part of the expenses incurred in giving these delicate
children the rest, change and care of which they are so much in need.
