MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
There are in the Borough 8 Municipal Centres, 3 Voluntary and 3
partly Voluntary and partly Municipal, for the attendance of mothers and
children under 5 years of age.
ANTENATAL CLINICS.
During the year the antenatal clinics for the Borough were held
weekly on Mondays and Fridays at Sutherland House and monthly at
Lambeth Road Centre. Sessions were also held at Guy's Hospital and
the General Lying-in Hospital,
During the year, Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Bergin each attended 45
sessions at Sutherland House and 11 sessions were also attended by
Dr. Shepherd at Lambeth Road Centre.
The figures for the year are as follows:—
SUTHERLAND HOUSE. (Mondays, Dr. Shepherd).
194 expectant mothers were seen and given advice. They made
439 attendances. Of this number, 79 were sent by mid wives, 93 by the
Health Visitors, and 12 came of their owu accord. 10 postnatal cases
were also seen.
SUTHERLAND HOUSE. (Fridays, Dr. M. Bergin.)
202 expectant mothers were seen and given advice. They made
433 attendances. Of this number, 177 were sent by midwives and 25 by
the Health Visitors.
LAMBETH ROAD CENTRE. (1 session monthly, Dr. Shepherd).
52 expectant mothers were seen and given advice. They made 151
attendances. Of this number 6 were sent by midwives, 36 by the
Health Visitors and 10 came of their own accord.
The Antenatal Clinics established at Sutherland House and at St.
Jude's Centres have continued to expand as they get known, and as the
value of the antenatal knowledge becomes better appreciated by the
prospective mothers.
Arrangements have been made for the interchange of information
between the Centre Medical Officer and the Midwife attending the case,
which should greatly benefit the patient.
Every effort is made to ensure proper surroundings for the event
to take place and ample hospital accommodation is available for cases
