The most noteworthy of these reductions is in the
case of continued fever, which has steadily declined
from an average of 121 deaths in the year to only 45,
the successive number for each of the quinquennial
periods being 121, 108, 97, and 45. Going back,
however, to a later date, I find that the reduction has
been still more marked; for in the seven years which
preceded my term of office, the average number of
deaths in the City from continued fever was 140 per
