Mr. Leggatt's report is as follows:β€”
Town Hall,
Upper Street,
Islington, N.
July 8th, 1907.
Dear Sir,
I beg to inform you that I have recently completed my annual inspection of
the whole of the Bakehouses in the Borough. It is with much pleasure that I am
able to report that I found them in an improved condition. I have still, however,
to draw attention to the objectionable practice of clothes being washed in the
bakehouses. On one occasion I found a quantity of very dirty underclothing, etc.,
lying on the floor and washing being done in close proximity to a newly drawn
batch of bread, and on another a bakehouse was temporarily converted into a
laundry to such an extent that to inspect it was a matter of difficulty. In several
instances I discovered clothes being aired or dried prior to being worn. It would
appear that the occupiers of bakehouses are under the impression that they can do
just as they please in this respect, and it is only by constant supervision and by
frequently reminding them that a Bakehouse β€œis a house or building for baking "
that we can hope for a change for the better.
I am of opinion that if the Master Bakers' Association would issue instructions
as to the proper use of a bakehouse, it would not only assist the Council's
Officers in their work, but would bring about a much desired improvement.
I am,
Yours faithfully,
JAMES R. LEGGATT.
Superintendent and Chief
Sanitary Inspector.
Dr. A. E. Harris,
Medical Officer of Health.
