not quite so much as the sub-districts do. Thus in Lower Holloway there
are 41,751 residents, and in St. Mary 17,484, so that the former is two and
one-third times more populous than the latter.
The full particulars as to their areas, densities and populations are to be
found in Table II.
Population.
The population of the borough was estimated to have reached at the
middle of the year 347,017 persons, of whom 164,985 were presumed to be
males and 182,032 females. It is by no means certain, however, that these
figures are exact, because the census return on which they are based, had
been taken six years previously. In calculating them it is presumed that
the rate of the increase of the population had continued to be the same as that
which had obtained in the decennium 1891-1900. The number of persons
living at the several age periods was also estimated on the same return, and
they, too, possibly are not quite correct. In any case, the error cannot be
very great, because the population is now increasing (if at all) very slowly, so
that the several birth and death-rates based on them will be very little affected.
Full particulars as to the number of persons living at nine age periods
are given in Table IV.
