Physical Features and General Character of the District.
—Broadly speaking the district is divided into a north and
south portion by the main line of the London and South
Western Railway. The northern area is mainly of larger
houses whereas the southern portion is mainly populated by
the working classes.
There are no particular occupations which would exercise
any influence on public health.
Area.—The area of the Borough (exclusive of the area
covered by water) is 3,173 acres.
Births.—Tlie number of births registered was 869 (438
males, 431 females), which is 90 more than last year, and
equal to a birth-rate of 13.9, which shows an increase on last
year's figure 13.6, and is 2.9 below the average for the previous
five years.
The corrected birth-rate, produced by transferable births
notified to us by the Registrar-General, is 13'8.
The corresponding rate for England and Wales for the
same period is given as 18.5.
