It may here be stated that the rates given in my periodical
reports have been based upon a figure 30,000 less than the estimate
of the Registrar-General, but also 30,000 more than the now discovered
corrected estimate.
All the rates in this report relating to the year 1900 are
calculated on the result of the recent Census, and all the rates for
past years contained in the tables at the end of the report have
been recalculated upon the corrected estimates of population given
above.
Although more properly falling within the report for 1901, it
may be useful here to record that the Census returns show an increase
in the number of persons per acre, and a slight increase in the number
of persons per house:—

Births and Deaths. The number of births registered
during the year was 8,885, being 106 in excess of the previous year,
equivalent to an annual birth-rate of 33.8 per 1,000. Distributed to
the various registration sub-districts, the births were as follows:—

The number of deaths registered was 5,156, being 57 fewer than
the deaths in 1899, equivalent to an annual death rate of 19.6 per
