The death-rates calculated upon the foregoing populations are
shown in the subjoined table. They differ considerably, one from
the other, and from the general death-rate of the Borough. Generally
speaking, the death-rates are higher than in previous years, which I
largely attribute to measles, which, in the earlier months of the year,
was very prevalent in Canning Town and West Silvertown, in the
latter district necessitating the closure of the infants' department of a
