account "for gain" had to be registered and none
were allowed to practise unless they came up to a
certain standard of knowledge, cleanliness,
intelligence, etc., but after 1911 only those will be
registered who hold a proper certificate by examination
from the Central Midwives' Board or some
other legally recognized Authority. In 1907 there
were five so practising in this district who between
them attended 116 cases or 34.1 per cent. of all
the births of that year. Last year these same five
attended 132 cases or 34/2 per cent. of all the
births registered. They are under the supervision
and direction of the Medical Officer of Health and
are visited from time to time, their registers and
appliances examined, and their work and experiences
gone into. They were favourably reported on,
but as only one of them is a qualified midwife by
examination and the others have no probable
prospect of becoming qualified by examination or
of being retained on the register at the expiration
of the appointed time, it remains still uncertain as
to who will then have to take up their work.
