Deaths from Zymotic Diseases.
The diseases included are, as in previous years, Smallpox, Scarlet Fever,
Diphtheria, Typhus, Enteric and simple Fevers, Cholera, Measles, Whooping
Cough, Diarrhoea and Dysentry, and Membraneous Croup. In all 80 deaths
were registered as occurring from these diseases, giving a zymotic death.rate
of 2.4 per 1000 of population. Compared with last year these figures give
an increase in the number of deaths from these diseases of 34, and an
increase in the death.rate from them of 1 per 1000. Of the total deaths from
zymotic diseases, no less than 63, or 85 per cent., were due to Diarrhoea, the
death.rate from this disease alone being 2.08 per 1000 of population at all
ages. The following table gives details of the zymotic deaths in 1904 and
those in the previous year for comparison:—

The follows table given detail of the zymotic deaths in 1904 and those in the previous year of for comparation:-

The points in the table most worthy of remark are the entire absence
of deaths from either Scarlet Fever or Typhoid Fever, and the marked
decrease in those due to Diphtheria and Whooping Cough. The satisfaction
that would be felt at these decreases is, however, entirely done away with
by the enormous increase in the deaths caused by Diarrhoea.
The
following table shows the zymotic death.rate since 1894:—
