DEATHS.
The number of deaths which took place in the Borough during
the year was 1,044. Of these, 32 were non.residents of the
Borough and can therefore be excluded. Particulars concerning
them were sent to the districts to which they belonged. 425
deaths were reported of persons belonging to the Borough which
had taken place in various institutions outside the district, viz.,
30 in the West Ham Workhouse, 142 in the Union Infirmary,
18 in the London Hospital, 43 in the Essex County Asylum, and
162 in various Hospitals, etc.
Including these we have a nett total of 1,437 (756 males and
681 females), which gives a rate of 10'1.
The death.rate for England and Wales was 13.7, and for the
96 great towns 14'3.

The following table, taken from the annual summary of the Registrar.General, shows the relative death.rate and infant mortality for a few large towns of England and Wales:—
