During the year, 119 inspections of registered premises were carried out. The following results were obtained from the bacteriological examination of samples:-

The percentage of doubtful and unsatisfactory samples was 13.3 as compared with
31.2 in 1956.
BAKEHOUSES - There are 20 bakehouses in the Borough and 133 visits of inspection
were made during the year.
SLAUGHTERHOUSES, etc. - There is no public abattoir, private slaughterhouse or
knacker's yard operating in the Borough
SLAUGHTER OP ANIMALS (AMENDMENT) ACT, 1954 - No application for a licence, under
the provisions of the Act, has been received.

INSPECTION OF MEAT AND OTHER FOODS - In addition to those mentioned elsewhere in this report, other food premises in the Borough and the number of inspections are listed below:-

At retail premises 4,185 lbs. and 2,597 tins or packets of unsound food were
seized by, or surrendered, to the Public Health Inspectors These unsound foods
were deposited on the Council's refuse tip and immediately and adequately covered by
refuse or other material.
The following foods were brought to the Department because the purchasers, were
not satisfied that they were fit for human consumption - bread, 9; cakes, 2; potatoes,
2, tinned fish. 2 black pudding, 1; sausage, 1; chocolate-coated biscuits, 1; fish
sticks, 1 meat pie, 1; meat, 1; marzipan substitute, 1; jam, 1; haricot beans, 1;
sausage roll, 1.
The complaints were not substantiated in 18 cases 4 official warnings were
issued; proceedings in 2 cases resulted in fines and costs amounting to £10 4s 0d;
and one case was dismissed on grounds that summonses were not in the form required.
Premises used for 'the preparation or manufacture of sausages or potted, pressed,
Pickled or preserved food for sale' are required under the Food and Drugs Act, 1955,
to be registered, and at the end of the year 104 such premises were registered.
Under Section 11 of the Middlesex County Council Act, 1950, hawkers of food and
their storage premises require to be registered. At the end of the year 42 hawkers
were on the register (greengrocery, 29; fish, 8; ice-cream 5) and 90 inspections of
their vehicles and wares were carried out.
MUNICIPAL RESTAURANTS AND SCHOOL CANTEENS - There is no municipal restaurant in
the Borough, but during the year the 20 school canteens provided 1,312,356 meals.
By the provision of new schools and the replacement of school canteens established
during the war, the facilities for meals at schools are being improved.

FOOD AND DRUGS SAMPLING - The following information on the work done in the Borough during 1957 has been supplied by the Public Control Department of Middlesex County Council:-
