II. GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES.
There have been few changes in the staff during the year. Miss Goodfellow,
a Health Visitor, ceased duty on the 20th August owing to her having
reached the age limit. The vacancy thus caused will be filled in the coming
year. The Council decided to continue the services of Mr. Roper, who had
been engaged as a temporary Sanitary Inspector for three years. Mr. H. J.
Mead, a temporary clerk, left the service of the Council in May to take up a
position elsewhere. Messrs. S. Lowther and J. Keniry, temporary clerks, were
placed on the permanent staff to fill the vacancies caused by two clerks having
been made permanent Sanitary Inspectors. With regard to the vacancy for
Tuberculosis Officer at the Shadwell Dispensary, Dr. W. J. Auld is still
carrying on in a temporary capacity.
Staff.
A list of the staff of the Public Health Department and their qualifications
is given on page 3.
The arrangements made with the East London Nursing Society for the
nursing of cases of Measles, Pneumonia following Measles, Ophthalmia Neonatorum,
Puerperal Fever, Puerperal Pyrexia and Pemphigus Neonatorum were
continued. The Council pay this Society 1s. 3d. per visit to such cases and
1,321 visits were made by them during the year, i.e., 1,255 Measles, 58
Ophthalmia Neonatorum and 8 Pemphigus Neonatorum.
Nursing in
the home.
There are 11 midwives practising in the Borough, and in addition there
are 2G employed by the voluntary associations.
Midwives.
The midwives are under the supervision of the London County Council.
The Council has arrangements with the London County Council for the
bacteriological examination at the Mile End Hospital of certain specimens sent
by medical practitioners.
Laboratory
Facilities.
The number of bacteriological examinations made on behalf of the Public
Health Department during the year was 2,204. These consisted of:—

There were 399 specimens of sputa examined at our Tuberculosis Dispensaries
for general practitioners. 39 of these were found to be positive.
1—The Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) (Malt Flour and Malt
Extract) Regulations, 1932.
The Regulations prescribe grade designations to indicate the quality of malt
flour produced from barley and/or wheat grown in England and Wales, also certain
grade designation marks.
The Regulations came into operation on the 16th February.
The Regulations of 1929 are revoked.
