Small Pox.
Vaccination has been discarded, and the Vaccination Acts
have been systematically evaded for many years, in the various
parishes comprising the Borough of Stepney, that it is no
wonder an epidemic of Small Pox has broken out among its
teeming thousands.
The first case in the epidemic did not occur till the middle
of September, though several cases occurred in the rest of
London in the early part of August. Two isolated cases
occurred, one in January and the other in June, and though
all the surroundings favoured the spread of the disease, no
second case occurred.
From September 21st to December 31st, 168 cases occurred,
and 31 proved fatal.
Forty-two—or one-fourth—occurred in common lodging
houses—39 in Whitechapel, and 3 in St. George's.
Nine occurred in the Whitechapel Infirmary. Of the
remainder—
42 occurred in the Limehouse District.
