* The decrease of population is attributed to the demolition of houses
for the construction of railways, the formation of new streets, and the
erection of business premises; the diminution in the number of inhabited
houses is due to the same causes, and to the erection of blocks of artizans'
dwellings in lieu of the, smaller description of houses, each block being
counted as one house.
