WORKMEN'S SLATE CLUB.
With a view to encourage habits of thrift among the Parish
workmen, the Vestry have decided to contribute the sum of
five shillings per week to the recently-formed Slate Club, this
contribution to take the place of sick pay by the Vestry in
individual cases. The club came into existence on the first
August last, and the result has so far fully realized the
expectations of its promoters.
REMOVAL OF SNOW.
In anticipation of a possible heavy snowfall, the Vestry
early in the winter sought and obtained a renewal of the conditional
consent of the Thames Conservators and the Metropolitan
Board of Works, to the casting of clean snow over
the parapet of the Victoria Embankment into the river.
Happily, however, the necessity did not arise for this consent
to be acted upon, for although several falls of snow
occurred during the winter, the use of salt sufficed to effect a
speedy removal on each occasion.
CONTRACTS FOR WORKS AND MATERIALS.
Particulars of the various contracts entered into or
continued during the year are given on page 133.
STREET LIGHTING.
On the 25th March, 1887, there were 771 public lamps in
the various thoroughfares of the Parish, 744 of which were
ordinary street lamps (458 burning cannel gas, and 286 burning
common gas), 4 were urinal lamps, and 23 were larger
amps attached to refuges.

The following is a statement of the number of loads reported to have been removed from the parish during the year :—
