predispose it to succumb to the action of poisons
from without.
By reference to the Inspector's Report, you will
see that certain establishments likely to become
nuisances have been constantly visited by your
Sanitary Inspector. Thus slaughter houses, cow
houses, and mews have been regularly visited.
During the year, the magistrates renewed the
licence for slaughtering on their premises to 13
butchers, and refused the application of 10 others.
In no case was any new licence to slaughter in
dwelling houses granted. Licences have also altogether
been refused in all cases where the
slaughtering of animals was carried on under
ground. It is to be hoped that these restrictions will
lead, gradually, to the alteration of the practice of
slaughtering in dwelling houses, or yards surrounded
by houses, altogether.
The following is a list of the cow houses and
number of cows kept in the parish of St. James's:—
Street. Number of Cows.
