required from mills, factories, and premises, trade refuse, &c., upon payment by the
occupiers thereof at 3/- per cubic yard. (For particulars of Contract see page 9.)
In February, 1888, the Vestry resolved to adopt the Pail system for the collection
of the Dust, &c. from the dwellings of the inhabitants twice-a-week in a section of the
parish, such section not to contain more than 1,000 houses; it was also resolved that
the block north of Union-road, commencing at Mill-pond Bridge and extending eastward,
with Albion-street as the southern boundary, so as to include 1000 houses, be
set apart as a District within which the Pail system for collecting the dust be so
carried out.
The Vestry obtained the 1000 Dust Pails required under a contract with Messrs.
Jukes, Coulson, Stokes & Co., of 13 Clements-lane, E.C., at a cost of £77 5s. Od.
The Vestry employ a Man in the district where the Pail system is adopted, at a
salary of 21/- per week, whose duty it is under the supervision of the Sanitary
Inspector to assist in the collection of the dust, &c by carrying the pails from the
houses to the front or side door, and by removing any surplus refuse which may have
accumulated bevond the contents of the pail.
