deaths was 503, with a death rate of 18 per 1,000. The
recorded natural increase of population from the excess of
births over deaths was 378.
The subjoined table shows the number of births and of
deaths, and the birth and death rates in the two Sub-districts
of the parish.

To those who do not clearly apprehend the meaning of the
terms birth rates and death rates, the diminution of mortality
in the parish, notwithstanding the increase of population, will
be apparent from the subjoined figures showing the total
deaths registered in Paddington from all causes during the
second quarters of the years 1876-80.

This remarkably low death rate corresponds with that
recorded throughout the country, both in urban and rural
districts. In the principal urban population of England and
Wales, the death rate was equal to 20.7, whilst in the rural
