in close accordance with the experience of former
years.
A death-rate of 15.7 per 1,000 for the whole
Parish must be considered satisfactory. At the
same time it must be borne in mind that in calculating
this death-rate no account is taken of the
deaths unknown to me of parishioners in the
hospitals of the Metropolitan Asylums Board, and in
other hospitals, institutions, and places beyond the
boundaries of the Parish. The deaths in the Parish
of persons who were not parishioners, merely temporary
sojourners in it, may be considered to some
extent as a set-off against such deaths. It will perhaps,
too, be conceded that a death-rate of 15.7 per
1,000, though greatly in excess of what it ought to
be, is, in these days of imperfect sanitation, one
which admits of a margin to meet such omissions.
The diminution of mortality in the Parish, notwithstanding
the yearly increase of population, is
apparent from the subjoined figures, which represent
the corrected numbers of deaths registered in Paddinglon
from all causes during the four years
1877-80, inclusive:—
Year Corrected Number
of Deaths.
1877 1,706
1878 1,761
1879 1,939
1880 1,667

The following table shows the ratio of deaths to the population, and the death-rate per 1,000 in the Parish and in its two sub-districts:—
