by
Dr. S. BLAKE JOLLY,
Medical Officer of Health for the District.
Gentlemen,
The number of deaths registered as having occurred in
the Lewisham District during the year 1899 was 1946 :
of these, 229 were of persons who did not belong to the District,

On the other hand 101 persons belonging to the District
died in hospitals and asylums outside, making the actual
total of deaths 1818, as against 1670 in the previous year,

11,382 in population during the year, and the death rate for
1899 was 13.9 per 1000, as compared with 14.0 per 1000 in
1898. The deaths from diseases of the respiratory organs
increased from 224 to 313, mainly owing to Influenza, 51
deaths being directly attributed to that disease, against 36 in
1898, and 12 and 11 respectively in 1896 and 1897. The
deaths from zymotic disease were 303 compared with 302 in
1898 ; but the deaths from diphtheria increased from 29 in
1898 to 70 in 1899. The deaths occurred almost entirely in
the Lewisham portion of the District. There was a decrease
in the deaths from measles and whooping cough, but
the mortality from diarrhoea in infants was again very great
