REGULATIONS
for the
MANAGEMENT OF THE MORTUARY.
1. The Mortuary is provided, pursuant to the requirements of
the Public Health (London) Act, 1891, for the reception
of dead bodies of parishioners and others dying in the
Lewisham District.
2. Bodies may be deposited in the Mortuary between the hours
of 8.30 a.m. and 8 p.m., and, in case of emergency, at any
other time, on application to the Mortuary Keeper.
3. All bodies deposited in the Mortuary, except in cases of
emergency, must be brought in properly constructed shells,
or coffins, and in cases of Infectious Disease or when
Decomposition has set in, the coffin, or shell, must be
filled with an approved Disinfecting Powder, and, except
in inquest cases, screwed down.
4. Any person depositing a body (except accident or inquest
cases), shall give the name, sex, age, place of residence,
and date of death of the person whose body is deposited to
the Mortuary Keeper, who shall enter such particulars in
his book.
5. The Mortuary Keeper is to give a receipt for all bodies, and
must take a receipt in his book from persons removing
bodies.
6. No body shall remain in the Mortuary for more than five
days, and the Medical Officer of Health may order the
burial at any earlier period he may deem necessary for
Sanitary reasons, unless it be otherwise ordered by any
Justice under Section 89 of the Public Health (London)
Act, 1891.
7. Bodies may be viewed for identification by not more than
three friends of the deceased at one time, during reasonable
hours in the day time.
8. The Mortuary Keeper shall be responsible for the keeping of
due order, decency, and decorum in the Mortuary at all
times.
