ENLARGEMENT OF THE TOWN HALL.
Tenders for this work were invited by public advertisement,
and on the 26th July Messrs. J. & C. Bowyer's
tender, at £19,700, was accepted, and the works were commenced.
Considerable progress has been made with the
work. The Board have made arrangements with the
Treasurers with regard to the sums required pending the
raising of the necessary Loan for the Works. The Board
found it necessary to make temporary arrangements for the
accommodation of part of their staff during the alteration,
and secured rooms on reasonable terms at Sangley Lodge,
Bromley Road, near the present building.
LONDON GOVERNMENT ACT, 1899.
This Act, by which the whole of the administrative
County of London, exclusive of the City of London, is divided
into Metropolitan Boroughs, received the Royal Assent and
became law on the 13th July, 1899; the Bill having been
introduced by the First Lord of the Treasury on the 23rd
February in that year.
Penge, which was attached to this District and of which
it formed part under the Metropolis Management Act, 1855,
for all administrative purposes is, under the new Act,
severed from the Lewisham District, and the Parish of
Lee, which formerly formed part of the Lee District Board
of Works, is attached to, and becomes part of, the Borough
of Lewisham.
