STREET LIGHTING.
The whole of the lamps in the Sydenham and Forest-hill and
Penge divisions of the District are supplied with gas by the
Ciystal I a lace District fias Company. The price for ordinary
lamps, 5 feet per hour burners, was, at the commencement of
this year, £3 2s. 10d. per lamp per annum; but this was reduced
to £3 Is. 3d. at Midsummer. This price includes lighting, extinguishing,
cleaning, painting, and repairing, and is subject to
5 per cent, discount for cash.
Negotiations were entered into with the Company for
adopting the incandescent system of lighting, and after a great
many suggestions an arrangement was made by which the Company
supply the No 2 incandescent burner, mantle, &c., complete
for 13s. fid. each, and to supply gas mantles, &c., for £2 10s.
per lamp per annum The Board is to continue to pay the old
price of £3 1s. 3d. per lamp per annum until the 13s. 6d , the
cost of supplying the burners &c., has been liquidated. It will
thus be seen that the benefit of the increased light is obtained
with no increased outlay, and that after the first cost of substituting
the incandescent burners, a saving of about £542 per
annum will be made in Sydenham and Forest-hill, and £212 per
annum in Penge.
During the last year 545 lamps in Sydenham and Foresthill,
and 72 lamps in Penge, were altered to incandescent burners.
The work is now proceeding, and will, I hope, soon be completed.
There are in Sydenham and Forest-hill 545 lamps with
incandescent burners, 418 with ordinary 5-feet per hour burners,
and 2fi Special lamps; 9 lamps were removed during the year;
67 of the improved lanterns referred to in my last annual report
were fixed.
In the Hamlet of Penge there are 305 lamps, with ordinary
burners, 72 with incandescent burners, and 26 Special lamps.
Three lamps were removed, 41 new pattern lanterns were fixed.
The following new lamps were erected:—
Sydenham and Forest Hill.
