EXTENSION OF TOWN HALL.
Quantities were taken out and advertisements issued for
tenders, and that of Messrs. J. & 0. Bowyer, Upper Norwood,
amounting to £19,700, was accepted. A Contract was duly
entered into and the work immediately commenced.
The Foundation Stone was laid by the Chairman of the
Board on the 21st February.
At the present time the following is the state of the
works:—The west block, which provides on the ground floor
three new offices, and on the first floor large Committee.room,
.ante.room, and private room, is now nearly finished.
The block facing Springfield Park Crescent, with an entrance
from same, is all roofed in, and some of the offices and strong
rooms in basement will soon be ready for occupation.
The extension of the Board.room is also in an advanced state,
and will, I fully anticipate, be ready by the end of October.
There were thirteen drawings and a lithographed Specification
of 92 pages to form the Contract, and a great deal of time
has been expended in preparing the necessary detail drawings,
which at the present time amount in number to 85; and tracings
of same (sometimes in duplicate) have been prepared for the
Contractors' use.
I think I may venture to say that the new buildings, when
completed, will be a decided improvement, and add materially to
the appearance of the old building.
UNDERGROUND CONVENIENCE :—THE OBELISK,
LEWISHAM.
An enquiry was held by the Local Government Board's Inspector,
and their sanction obtained for the Loan.

tenders, and that of Messrs B. Finch & Co., Lambeth, amounting
to £2,229, was accepted.
