A great deal of attention has been given to the repair of the
roads, and the use of slop (or road sweepings) for binding in
granite has been entirely discontinued, fine Croydon gravel having
been mostly used; this, although, of course, adding to the first
cost of laying a broken granite road, is undoubtedly economical
in the end, as the roads not only wear better but they are cleaner,
and there is not the same amount of slop to be removed after
every rain. A portion of Anerley-road was laid with granite
broken to a smaller size, and granite chippings were used to bind
it in ; this has made a very good road but the expense of rolling
