* For statistical purposes the Registrar-General estimates the population to
the middle of each year, taking as the basis the rate of increase ruling between
the two preceding Census periods. The estimate of population here is calculated
from the known number of inhabited houses at the middle of the year, and the
average number of inmates per house, which is estimated in Lewisham at 6.15,
and in Penge at 6.65.
