Rain fell upon 137 days, and the rainfall was 9.71 inches
less than the corresponding period last year.
ROAD WATERING.
The greatest portion of the road watering in Lewisham was
done by the Board's horses and men; in Sydenham and Forest
Hill, at a contract price of 8s. 3d. per horse and man ; and in the
Hamlet of Penge, at 8s. 6d. per horse and man.
The actual cost of the watering in the Parish of Lewisham
for the year was £2,279 14s. 10d., and in the Hamlet of Penge
£673 19s. 2d.
The watering in Lewisham and Penge was extended during
the year, and two new water carts were purchased for the Hamlet
of Penge
During the hot weather the supply of water from the Lambeth
Water Company was very deficient. I regret this very
much, as it prevented me carrying out an improvement I am
anxious to effect, viz., increasing the number of stand posts,
and thereby increasing the efficiency of the watering. It would
be worse than useless my erecting more stand posts when I
cannot obtain an adequate supply of water for those already in
