NOTES.
1. Population at Census 1871, 49727.
2. Area in acres, 6544.
3. Average No. of Persons in each house at Census 1871, 6.1/5.
* For statistical purposes the Registrar-General estimates the population to
the middle of the year as the basis of the rate of increase ruling between the
two preceding Census periods. The estimate of population now calculated is
from the known number of inhabited houses, and by the average number of
inmates per house, as ascertained at the preceding Census.
* * The deaths of wow-parishioners in public institutions within the Lewisham
District, as far as can be ascertained, are pretty evenly balanced by the mortality
of inhabitants out of the District; thus, 7 non-parishioners have died in the
Union Workhouse, and 6 in the North Surrey District School, whilst 10 parishioners
have died out of the District in the Croydon Union Workhouse alone.
