Tubercular Diseases.—95 deaths (the same number
as last year), or 174 per 1000 population, were caused by
tubercular diseases, scrofula, phthisis, and tabes, the great
majority (88) being occasioned by phthisis.
Wasting Diseases of Infants.—The wasting diseases
of infants, viz., marasmus, atrophy, debility, want of breast
milk, and premature birth, caused the deaths of 68, or 1.25 per
1000 population.
Convulsive Diseases of Infants.—The convulsive
diseases of infants, viz., hydrocephalus, infantile meningitis,
convulsions, and teething caused 73 deaths, or 1.34 per 1000
population, against 62 registered in the previous year.
Public Institutions.
The Board's Hospital, Hither Green.—The provision
of a hospital (which has now been established for some years)
in which to isolate infectious cases, is a most important
advance towards diminishing disease, and its benefits, both
retrospective and prospective, are duly felt by the residents of
the District.
It speaks well, however, for the health of the inhabitants
that its advantages have not been so much required in 1873.
Three cases only were admitted, viz.,
Jan. 10. Scarlet fever, discharged cured Feb. 1.
March 4. Scarlet fever do. do. March 26.
Sept. 21. Measles do. do. Sept. 30.
Union Workhouse, Lewisham.—The daily average
number of Paupers in the Union Workhouse for the year
1873 has been 176; and there have been 383 admissions and
382 discharges, together with the reception of 3000 Vagrants
during the same period.
20 births and 39 deaths were registered during the year.
The North Surrey District School.—This school now
accommodates 805 inmates, and the infirmary will accommodate
168 sick children, so that if the infirmary should be full,
973 children can be lodged upon the premises.
