Upon Works executed from Lady-day, 1872, to Lady-day, 1873.
Gentlemen,
I have the pleasure of presenting my fourth Annual
Report upon works executed in my department.
The total cost of the Highways in the Parish of lewisham
for labour, cartage, and material, &c., was £7,484 9s. Od.
This sum includes the Former New Cross Roads, improving
the approaches to Lewisham Bridge, making up Peak Hill
Road, and £1,071 12s. 11d. the cost of laying Tar Pavement.
In the Hamlet of Penge the total expenses of the Highways
were £1,853 0s. 3d., and the sum of £501 6s. 11d.
was expended in laving Tar Pavement.'

The rainfall during the year was very heavy, being
29 89 inches. There were 193 days in which rain fell. From
the 1st October, until the end of December, I may say there
was hardly a fine day, or—at all events—the roads were
never dry, and consequently in our absorbent flint roads
they became rotten, which necessitated additional care, labor,
and material.
