district the Children's Workhouse is situated; there were 13
deaths in the establishment, which contained an average of 430
children during the year; excluding the Workhouse, the deathrate
of the Norwood district would bo only 162 per 10,000
persons.
Epidemic Diseases (Table IV.) caused 885 deaths, being in the
proportion of nearly 21¼ per cent. of the entire mortality.
In the previous year Epidemic diseases caused 21¼ per cent.,
and in 1864, 23½ per cent. of the entire mortality; so that, including
the presence of Cholera, the death rate from Epidemic
Diseases in 1866, diminished. Diarrhoea caused 180 deaths,
Fever 159, Whooping Cough 139, Measles 131, Cholera 114,
Scarlatina 78, Small Pox 58, and Diptheria 26 deaths.
The year was remarkable for the sudden and violent outbreak
of Cholera in the East District of London, where 3931 deaths
occurred from it, being in the proportion of 64½ per 10,000 of the
estimated population. Early measures, in anticipation of it, were
adopted in Lambeth; 10,000 notices and handbills were posted or
distributed, advising inhabitants respecting the precautions they
should use. Ten Medical Officers were appointed at the beginning
of August to supply Medicines and Attendance instantly, free of
charge; an extra Medical Visitor was also employed for a short
time in the district most affected; tho number of cases treated by
them are shown in Table V; they amounted to 332 cases of
Cholera and Choleraic Diarrhoea, and 3,269 cases of Diarrhoea in
August, with 16 deaths; 105 cases of Cholera and Choleraic
Diarrhoea, and 1,306 of Diarrhoea in September, with 12 deaths ;
and 123 of Cholera and Choleraic Diarrhoea, and 844 of Diarrhoea
in October, with 27 deaths. A daily report was furnished by
each Medical Officer to the Medical Officer of Health, giving an
account of every fresh case of Cholera occurring in their districts,
which, together with a daily return of deaths kindly supplied by
the Registrar General, proved of the greatest service in enabling
