sleeping at a common lodging house in Kingston and
occasionally at his home in Fulham, working during the
day as a jobbing gardener at Kingston, Twickenham and
Fulham.
The second smallpox patient was a man of 25 years
who became ill on 16th August. He was employed as a
plumber and his case was not notified to this department
until a letter was received from the Medical Officer of

he was in hospital suffering from smallpox.
Although only two cases of smallpox were notified
during 1928, a large number of smallpox contacts were
reported and had to be kept under observation during
the time corresponding to the incubation period of the
disease.
