It will be noticed that there is a decrease in the proportion
of children in the population, which is of course due to the
decreasing birth-rate.
Natural Increase of the Population.
During the intercensal period of 5 years there were 21,579
births in Fulham and 11,075 deaths of residents in the borough,
or an excess of registered births over deaths of 10,504, the gain
by migration during the same period being 13,004. During the
previous intercensal period of 5 years, 1891 — 1896, the excess of
births over deaths was 8,503 and the gain by migration 13,638.
Social Condition of the Inhabitants.
As at the census of 1891, each head of family or separate
occupier living in less than five rooms was asked to state the
number of rooms occupied, and the subjoined table gives the
number of these tenements:—

32,137, compared with 20,640 in 1891, an increase of 55.7
per cent.
