Diphtheria.
The number of cases of diphtheria notified in 1901, was
practically the same as in the preceding year, 636 cases of
diphtheria and 8 of membranous croup being reported, compared
with 630 of diphtheria and 11 of membranous croup in 1900.
The cases occurring in the four quarters of the year, were :—

Fatality.—Although there was no diminution in the number
of cases, there was a marked fall in the fatality of the disease,
the number of deaths, viz. 48, being actually fewer than in any
year since 1892, the case mortality, viz. 7'5 per cent. being
the lowest yet recorded.
The decline in the fatality of this disease in recent years,
which is mainly due to the use of anti-toxic serum, will be seen
from the following table:—
