Between the age of one and five years 278 deaths were
registered, so that the deaths of children under the age of five
years numbered 978 or 44.9 per cent. of the total number of
deaths.
These deaths were equal to an annual rate of 54.8 per 1,000
of the population living at that age, the corresponding rate for
the metropolis being 57'2.
Deaths of Illegitimate Children.
68 of the children who died before attaining the age of one
year were illegitimate, the mortality among them being in the
proportion of 302 deaths to every 1,000 births, or twice as
heavy as that of children born in wedlock.
