TABLE XII.
TABLE XI.
Rooms in Tenement. | Number of overcrowded Tenements. | Percentage of overcrowded Tenements. | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
1901. | 1891. | 1901. | 1891. | |
Tenements of 1 room | 512 | 634 | 21 | 28 |
„ 2 rooms | 723 | 728 | 17 | 23 |
„ 3 „ | 752 | 637 | 9 | 12 |
„ 4 „ | 354 | 180 | 5 | 7 |
All tenements with fewer than 5 rooms | 2,341 | 2,179 | 11 | 18 |
From the above it will be seen that there is a marked diminution
in the worst cases of over-crowding, and that the percentage
of the population living under unquestionably over-crowded
conditions, i.e., more than two persons to a room, has declined
from 14.3 per cent. in 1891 to 11.5 per cent. in 1901, so that
taking these figures into consideration, together with the relative
decrease of one-roomed tenements, we are entitled to say that
the standard of comfort in house accommodation has improved
during the last ten years.
