Midwives.
The London County Council still remains the supervisory
authority under the Midwives Acts.
Through the courtesy of the County Medical Officer of Health
information was received that 40 midwives gave notice during 1932
of their intention to practise in the Borough.
There are no midwives employed by the Council. The fees of
midwives attending the confinements of necessitous women are paid
by the Council when requested and on the recommendation of the
Maternity and Child Welfare Committee.
Public Baths and Washhouses.
These are provided by the Borough Council at the following
situations: Church Street, Camberwell, Goose Green, East Dulwich,
Old Kent Road and Wells Street, Camberwell.
There are first and second class swimming pools, warm baths
and public washhouses at each of the Public Baths in the Borough,
with the exception that washhouse provision is not available
at the Dulwich Baths and there are no swimming facilities at Wells
Street Baths. Turkish and Russian baths are also provided at the
Old Kent Road Baths.
The water in all the swimming baths is purified by means of a
filtration and aeration plant, and is also chlorinated. Bacteriological
and chemical tests of the water are conducted monthly during the
summer months, and alternate months during the winter at the
Church Street second class baths, where swimming facilities are
provided all the year round.
The results of these tests show that the filtration plants at the
bathing establishments are efficient and ensure a satisfactory water
for bathing.
