Diarrhoea and Enteritis.
There were 44 deaths from this disease in 1932, 37 of which
occurred in children under two years of age.
The diminution of the fly nuisance, improved sanitation, a
better and a cleaner milk supply, and instruction in infant feeding
have doubtless been the principal factors in the reduction in the
number of deaths from this cause during the past 25 years. There is
reason to believe that with greater co-operation by mothers in
matters of personal and domestic hygiene, the mortality rate could
still further be reduced.
Influenza.
The epidemic of mild influenza which was experienced at the
end of 1931 continued in the month of January, 1932, when 10 deaths
were registered. During the year there were 53 deaths from this
disease in the Borough as against 6l in 1931.
Infantile Mortality.
Deaths of children under one year of age numbered 234, and
equalled a death rate of 65 per 1,000 live births. Particulars of
these deaths are set. out in the table which appears on page 13.
There were 2(5 more deaths in this age group than in 1931,
and the mortality rate is 9 points higher.
The deaths of 12 illegitimate children were recorded during
the year as compared with 14 the year previously.
The principal causes of death were Premature Birth 36, Pneumonia.
and Bronchitis is 40, and Diarrhoea, Enteritis and Gastritis 39.
There were 18 fewer deaths from respiratory diseases in 1932,
but the number of deaths from Diarrhoea, Enteritis and Gastritis
shows an increase of 12, Whooping Cough 11,Measles 5, Congenital
Malformation 4, and Other Causes an increase of 6 as compared
with the number of deaths recorded in this group in 1931.

The number of deaths recorded from this cause during the last six years is as follows:—
