DEATHS OF YOUNG CHILDREN.
As usual, nearly half the deaths (1443, equal that is to 48.7 per
cent.), were those of young children aged less than five years.
Assuming that the proportion of young children to adults has
been maintained since the last census, the number of young
children in 1888 would be 19,923. Upon this estimated population
we show a death rate of 72.1.
