The diseases shewing excessive mortality over the whole Metropolitan
area were Diarrhœal Diseases, Cancer, Premature Birth,
Diseases of the Circulatory System, and Diseases of the Urinary
System. Now, the increase in the number of diarrhœal deaths was
doubtless owing to the hot summer, the mean temperature of each
month from July to October inclusive having been considerably
above the average. The mortality attributable to the other four
groups of diseases appears to be persistently increasing; and the
Registrar-General states that this increase is not peculiar to
London, but is shared by the rest of the country. On the other
hand, the diseases shewing diminished mortality were Fevers,
Tubercular Diseases, Diseases of the Nervous System and Diseases
of the Respiratory System. The Registrar-General expresses
a hope that, as the diminution in the mortality from these diseases
has been going on for some years, it will be permanently
maintained.

In the following Table are compared the mortality rates for London and for Bethnal Green by quarters:—
