???etter to me, reports most favourably upon the apparatus, and in
answer to my question as to which of the two patterns is the best, he
says that he prefers the one shown in the illustration on page 7, which
s the one he has in use in Salford, and gives the following reasons :—
1. The greater capacity of the machine enabling one to disinfect a
nuch larger quantity of bedding at one operation.
2. The facility which the machine offers for the thorough separa???ion
of infected from purified bedding, as this cannot be done at all
satisfactorily in the old form (which was the pattern viewed by the
Sanitary Committee at Mr. Lyon's works). Dr. Tatham considers
this point so important as to far overbalance the additional expense
and bulk of the machine.
3. The very substantial construction of the new machine, which is
so heavy and solid in all its parts that it seems impossible to put it
out of repair, or even to wear it out when once it is in good working
order. The disadvantages are the cost (£250) and the necessity which
exists of erecting a special building for its accommodation and a highpressure
steam boiler to work it.
Mr. Washington Lyon informs me that the two doors now open
separately, and that the oval machines can be made with two doors, if
required; he considers the oval shape the best for general use.
Mr. Alderman Taylor, Chairman of the Sanitary Committee of the
Corporation of Rochdale, says the Lyon's Disinfecting Apparatus fully
answers our expectations; it has now been at work nearly three years.
The machine has now had an extensive trial in many places and
under various conditions; its performance has fully equalled the
results promised by the inventor, and I trust the Vestry of Bethnal
Green will shortly see its way to provide this very necessary
apparatus.
I believe it would pay for itself in the course of a few years, as we
should avoid the cost of destroying and replacing infected bedding,
and moreover, should be able to disinfect articles of clothing, &c., which
are now allowed to remain and disseminate disease, as we can only
fumigate them with sulphur, a process of the efficacy of which I am
not at all satisfied.
I have the honour to be, Gentlemen,
Your most obedient servant,
GEOEGE PADDOCK BATE.
